Open and structurally expressive this home derives much of its character and uniqueness from sustainable and recycled materials. Some distinctive features include a fireplace mantel that began its life as a South African railroad tie and was reclaimed from the hold of a ship where it was being used as ballast. A huge, recycled anchor chain is suspended from a curved copper roof as a downspout. Rubber roofing shingles which resemble slate and have a fifty year warranty were used to roof the rest of the home. Exposed steel and gluelam timbers were chosen for long life and their ability to create inspiring spaces. Scraps of slate culled from the construction site were laid as a mosaic for the custom made dining room table cantilevered from the floor. Maritime constructs reflect owner's travels while an isolated steel tower allows for vibration free star gazing. Triple layered bookcases alleviate the numerous walls required to house acquired artifacts.
